Earning their fourth dual win of the year and their third in the Western Wrestling Conference, the Wyoming Cowboys won seven of ten matches for the second straight dual to dominate the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State Friday night in the UniWyo Sports Complex 31-12.

The Cowboys improve to 4-9 overall and 3-1 in WWC action. The Jackrabbits fall to 8-6 overall and 1-3 in the WWC. Wyoming now leads the conference in victories with three.

"We are really starting our big push here towards the end of our season," Associate Head Coach Matt Johnson said. "Things are starting to come together."

Wyoming started off the night at the 149 pound weight class which features junior Carter Downing who leads the Cowboys in every category. Downing was up 4-2 when South Dakota State's Dan Bonte injury defaulted to give the Cowboys the early lead. Downing improved his team record to 28-7.

After dropping the next two matches, the Pokes got two big victories from sophomore Dan Barrone and junior Bryan Bernal. Barrone had weighed in at 171 pounds earlier in the day and wrestled at 184 pounds. He scored a clutch takedown with one second left in the third period to earn the victory 3-1.

"It was a rough match, I have been working hard on my shots and it worked out tonight," Barrone said.

Bernal finished strong in the 174 pound bout to beat Chris Moran 8-3.

Senior Sam Wendland, who had been severely missed after a six week injury absence at the 197 pound weight class, continued his domination to improve his record to 11-1. Wendland beat Travis Gottschalk by major decision 18-7.

After a tough UW loss at the heavyweight division, the Cowboys won their last three matches to cap the 31-12 victory. The three lightweight matches were highlighted by redshirt freshman Nick Ramirez's pin over Marcus Waters at the 2:52 mark, improving his win total to 19. Redshirt freshman Cory VomBaur won his match by forfeit and redshirt sophomore Garrett Desmond scored a late takedown to beat Derek Pirner 4-3 in 141 pound bout.

"I am happy with the way we wrestled tonight," Johnson continued. "The rest of our schedule looks pretty even on paper and we are going to make our big push at the end and try to peak for regionals."

The Cowboy grapplers will return to the mat in exactly one week as they host the Air Force Academy in their final home dual of the season. The Cowboys and Falcons will hit the mat at 7 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
