UW senior Jason Still scored a late third period takedown to give the Cowboys their second Western Wrestling Conference victory of the season as Wyoming defeated Utah Valley State 20-15 in the UniWyo Sports Complex Saturday night. Wyoming improves to 3-7 overall and 2-2 in the WWC while UVSC falls to 7-11 overall and 1-4 in the WWC.

"I am proud of the way we worked," UW head coach Steven Suder said. "Tonight was a big win for us and we need to continue to do the little things right for us to be successful."

Wyoming wrestled with an attitude the entire night from the first match at 125 pounds all the way to the heavyweight match. The Pokes fell behind 3-0 after the first bout, but then regained the lead and never looked back.

Sophomore Cory VomBaur got the Pokes rolling with a 10-5 decision over Logan Wilson of UVSC with four takedowns to tie the score at 3-3.

Senior Carter Downing scored a first period takedown and a last second two-point nearfall in the third period to defeat Jeff Newby by major decision 8-0 to give the Pokes their first lead 7-3.

After the Cowboys won three of their last five bouts giving them the 17-15 advantage, the pinnacle of the evening belonged to UW senior Jason Still as he headed into the final match of the night with the Cowboy victory riding on his shoulders. Still scored a takedown early in the first period, but UVSC freshman Zach Williams came back with two escapes and a takedown to give him the 4-3 lead in the third period. Still continued to battle and scored an escape and then a takedown at the 6:37 mark to seal the 6-4 victory and the Cowboys second conference win of the season.

"I am really proud of Jason," Suder continued. "One guy can't win or lose a match for you but Jason did his job tonight and it helped us get the big win."

Other key victories for the Cowboys included a major decision by Eric Coxbill over Gehrhart Vuksinick 21-10, an 8-2 decision by redshirt freshman Cole Dallaserra over Nate Gardner and senior Kyle Morrow beat Marc Fenwick 5-3.

"I told our team before the match, we are a bunch of blue collar guys and we need to fight hard tonight," Suder said. "We had some guys in our early weight classes that really got our team rolling. One guy goes out and wrestles hard and the rest of our team feeds off of that energy. It doesn't get any easier though, every team in our conference is tough and we need to come back tomorrow and begin to prepare for our next dual or else this win means nothing."

The Cowboys will take a break from conference action as they host the Titans of Cal-State Fullerton next Saturday, Feb., 16 in the UniWyo Sports Complex. Action will begin at 7 p.m.
