The Wyoming wrestling team came up short Sunday afternoon against Cal State-Fullerton 28-15 in Fullerton, Calif. The Cowboys did manage victories in four of nine matches against the Titans.
The dual started with the 157 pound bout and saw Wyoming's Kyle Dye up against Morgan Atkinson of the Titans. Atkinson was able to out last Dye in a 8-7 decision. UW's Gary Dack then would even out the score with his 7-4 decision victory over Risto Marttinen. The 19th ranked 174 pounder, Leonel Sanchez of Cal-State Fullerton would break the tie when he pinned Cowboy Clint Stout at the 3:27 mark.
Wyoming junior, Sam Wendland then got his second win of the weekend when he wrestled Jesse Taylor to a 5-2 decision. After a Cowboy forfeit at 197 pounds, junior Dusty Hoffschneider managed his second pin, in his first weekend back from injury, when he pinned Dan Ott at 4:29. The Hoffschneider pin cut the Titan lead to 15-12.
UW's Bryce Leonhardt then faced the 19th ranked 125 pounder in the nation, Jesse Miramontes. Miramontes took the bout in a 13-6 count. The Pokes 133 pounder Tyson Shatto earned his third consecutive win when he out wrestled Paul Tice to a 7-5 decision.After Shatto's victory the Titan lead was cut to 18-15.
Unfortunately from there on out it was all Titans. Titan Juan Mora pinned Wyoming's Garrett Desmond at the :37 mark and Cal-State's Jeff Silva defeated Cowboy Carter Downing in a 14-6 major decision.These last two Titan victories brought the final to 28-15.
The Pokes will come back home next weekend when they will play host to the North Dakota State Bison on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the MultiPurpose Gymnasium. This will be the final home dual for the Cowboys in the 2004-05 season.
