Wyoming defeated Northern Colorado 27-18 Wednesday in wrestling dual action in Greeley, Colo. The Cowboys had two falls and three decisions in running away with the victory.
Seniors Steven Schenk and Craig Rumsey each pinned their opponent, giving UW 12 team points. Schenk defeated Shane Grenko by fall at 2:53 and Rumsey pinned Jason McMillan at 5:57. For Schenk it was his 18th win of the year and for Rumsey it was his 16th. Behind Schenk and Rumsey, Wyoming pushed it dual record to 7-5 on the season.
Wyoming had a couple of big wins at 141 pounds and 157 pounds. At 141, Thad Trujillo defeated Simon Hoepfner 7-3 to give the Pokes a 9-6 lead. With the win Trujillo moved his record to 8-7 overall. At 157, freshman Levi Prevost defeated Brody Olson 3-2. Prevost has been wrestling strong for Wyoming lately and moved his record to 10-8. Olson fell to 18-11 overall.
Freshman and Rock Springs native Kevin Kessner also had a big win for the Cowboys when he won his 184 pound match 17-11 over Ryan Guillaume. Kessner evened his record up at 14-14. Wyoming also scored team points when Kelly McConville won his 133 pound match by forfeit. The Cowboys did forfeit the match at heavyweight.
John Faczak (125), Mark Hamrick (149) and Justin Christenson (165) were the only Pokes to lose their matches. Faczak lost by fall at 4:50 to Jason Romero, Hamrick lost a decision to Marshall Hahn 4-2 and Christenson fell to Brian Hufford 6-1.
Wyoming will now prepare for a busy weekend at home. On Friday UW hosts Portland State at 7:00 p.m. in the MultiPurpose Gymnasium. Then on Saturday the Cowboys host #16 Fresno State at 12:00 p.m. in the Arena-Auditorium. Please note the time and place of the Fresno State match. The dual has been moved due to the women's basketball game against Brigham Young.
