Wyoming knew their final dual of the season would not be easy, but a solid effort gave the Pokes a third consecutive victory Wednesday night, a 19-16 conquest over the University of Northern Colorado Bears at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion in Greeley, Colo. The Cowboys finish the year 4-1 in the Western Wrestling Conference and 5-9 overall, while the Bears fall to 2-4 in the WWC and 5-11 overall.

"This was a real confidence builder for us," Associate Head Coach Matt Johnson said. "This showed us that we can win close matches and this is what it's going to be like at the NCAA Regionals in two weeks."

The dual started off with Wyoming's Carter Downing defeating Richard Lohr 8-4. Downing completes his perfect 5-0 WWC record and extends his consecutive dual win streak to nine matches and 29-7 overall.

Wyoming then lost the second match of the night, but came right back with two victories by junior Kyle Morrow and junior Bryan Bernal. Morrow defeated Devan Lewis 3-2 for his ninth victory of the year and Bernal defeated Chase Walker 2-0 for his 22nd victory of the year.

Senior Sam Wendland also finished perfect in WWC action defeating Calen Nicholl by major decision 16-5. Wendland improved to 4-0 in the WWC and 12-1 overall. Wendland won three of his four WWC matches by major decision and one by technical fall.

Heading into the last three matches Wyoming held a 13-10 lead. In two of those last three matches Wyoming came out victorious to finish off the Bears 19-16. Redshirt freshman Nick Ramirez defeated Tony Mustari 3-2 and redshirt freshman Cory VomBaur defeated Blayze Bahe 5-3

"Nick (Ramirez) wrestled a complete match and held off a takedown at the end to get the win," Johnson continued." We needed Cory (VomBaur) to step up and wrestle through some adversity and some injuries and he did that tonight for us."

"We knew it would be a struggle, but we wrestled strong and came out on top."

The Cowboys will have a week to rest and prepare before they head to Cedar Falls, Iowa to compete in the 2007 NCAA West Regionals Saturday, March 3. The tournament is set to begin at 8 a.m. Mountain Time and run all day.
