In the final dual of the 2001-2002season, in his final match as a Cowboy and in the final match of thenight, Cowboy senior Kelly McConville managed one final win in front ofthe home crowd. In a very close match, McConville was able to hold offAir Force's Andrew Peters 1-0, giving him his 58th career victory onsenior night.
McConville's effort wasn't enough however as the Air Force AcademyFalcons (10-3) were able to get by Wyoming 22-16, at the MultiPurposeGym in Laramie. The Cowboys (5-11) won four matches against theFalcons including one pin and one major decision.
Wyoming fell behind 8-0 after the first two matches, losing both the141 and 149 pound matches by major decisions. At 141, UW redshirtfreshman Cody DeGroot fell to Chris Bennett 11-2. DeGroot was startingin place of usual starter, senior Mark Hamrick, who was held out of thematch due to an illness. In the 149 pound match Cowboy Thad Trujillowasn't able to do much against No. 15 ranked Scott Frohardt, losing13-4.
Wyoming began battling its way back starting with sophomore LeviPrevost in the 157 pound match. Prevost, ranked No. 20, jumped allover AFA's Blaine Brown, recording five takedowns and one near fall onway to his 15-3, major decision victory. The win cut the Falcon's leadin half at 4-8.
Losing 3-1 with :15 left in the 165 pound match, UW's Justin Salasscored a takedown and a near fall as time expired to pull out athrilling 7-3 win over Samuel Sheretz. The win brought the Pokes towithin one point, 7-8.
Air Force would take a four point lead on the heels of a slim one pointwin at 174 pounds. AFA's Terry Perham just edged Wyoming's E.K.Waldhaus, 4-3, gaining an additional point at the end of the match forriding time advantage.
The Pokes would take the lead 13-11, after the 184 pound match when UWsophomore Kevin Kessner pinned Josh McCrary just :32 into the match.Kessner attacked McCrary from the start scoring a quick takedown beforerecording the pin. The pin was the second of the season for Kessner.
In a very tight matchup, Cowboy freshman Malcolm Havens took RyanKaiser into overtime in the 197 pound match before Kaiser managed atakedown :41 into the one minute overtime period to take the win 4-2.The win give Air Force its second one point lead of the night at 14-13.
Air Force built on its lead in the heavyweight match when 10th rankedKevin Hoy took down Brad Steele 13-4. With the match tied at 4-4 earlyin the third period, Hoy went on to score two takedowns and two nearfalls to score the major decision win. Air Force widened its lead to18-13 with the victory.
With the dual still in doubt and two matches remaining, Air Force put adagger in the Cowboys hope for a win when Heath McKim scored a majordecision victory over Reynold Candelaria, 8-0 in the 125 pound match.The win gave the Falcons a 22-13 lead heading into the final match ofthe night. McConville's win at 133 made the final score 22-16 in favorof Air Force.
"We were expecting a whole bunch of tough matches and that's what wegot," said Wyoming head coach Steven Suder. "They weren't only toughmatches but tough matches against a very strong team. The good thing totake out of this match though is that I feel like some of our youngerguys are really starting to learn how to battle and tasting what itmeans to make some real conscience decisions on the mat. Air Forcebrought a tough team in here in, my hat's off to them."
The Cowboys will next compete at the 2002 West Regional in Fresno,Calif., on March 9. The regional will qualify wrestlers for the NCAAChampionships. Last season Wyoming placed third at the six teamregional, qualifying three wrestlers for nationals.
