OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -
The University of Wyoming wrestling team finished up competition at the 2006 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., on Friday. Four Cowboys managed to make it into Friday's action, but were unable to advance another day.
The lone Cowboy victory on Friday came from the effort of Leonhardt. The 125 pounder went up against the same opponent he lost to in the West Regional Championship in Seth Wright from Northern Iowa. This time it would be Leonhardt's turn as he defeated Wright, 8-6. He then would wrestle the #8 seed John Velez of Northwestern. At the end of regulation, the two fought to a 3-3 tie before Velez was able to record a takedown to win in overtime, 5-3.
Downing faced Morgan Atkinson of Cal-State Fullerton on Friday morning. With the score tied 2-2 and only seconds remaining in the first period, Atkinson managed to take Downing to the mat to record a pin at the 2:59 mark.
The road for Clum did not get any easier on Friday. After already facing the #1 seed yesterday, next up was the #6 seed Brandon Becker of Indiana. Clum would battle with Becker, but Becker was able to record a victory by pin at the 4:32 mark.
Another Cowboy still remaining on Friday was Hoffschneider. The heavyweight faced the #11 seed Spencer Nadolsky of North Carolina. Nadolsky managed to end Hoffschneider's tournament when he won in a 6-3 decision.
