Wyoming Wrestling came up short against the University of Oregon losing 19-17 Thursday night in the UniWyo Sports Complex. Wyoming falls to 0-1 in dual action and Oregon improves to 1-0.

The Cowboys won four of 10 matches on the night. Earning those four wins were redshirt senior Sam Wendland, junior Carter Downing, junior Bryan Bernal and redshirt freshman Cory VomBaur.

Wyoming headed into the final match of the night down 14-19 with NCAA qualifier Bryan Bernal having to pin Ron Lee of Oregon to give the Cowboys the dual victory. Bernal led throughout the match and was up 7-4 heading into the final minute of the third period. Lee earned a takedown at the 6:01 mark to cut the score to 7-6, then Bernal gave one last burst of energy and scored a takedown that almost ended in a pin as the final whistle blew. Bernal earned riding time for another point to defeat Lee 10-6, but it wasn't enough as the Cowboys fell 19-17.

"Bernal was put in a very tough situation tonight," head coach Steven Suder said. "We made him aware of it, then I told him to take care of you, then take care of this team. He gave it everything he had."

Wyoming's Carter Downing dominated Oregon's Stewart Bogart in the 149 pound weight class winning by major decision 15-0. Downing's first takedown happened at the :56 mark and he never looked back. He collected four near falls and a reversal to win 28 seconds into the second period.

Wyoming's Wendland also had a strong night defeating Chris Robertson in the 197 pound weight class by pin 27 seconds into the second period. The pin was Wendland's first of the year and the only one of the dual.

Vombaur of Wyoming won his match at the 133 pound weight class defeating Joey Lucas 4-1 with a takedown, escape and one point for riding time.

"I saw a lot more positives then negatives tonight," Suder continued. "Some young guys did some things that were very encouraging." Suder added.

The Cowboys will return to action Saturday November 11 for the annual Cowboy Open in the fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Wyoming. 22 teams will be competing in the open which begins at 9 a.m.
