Wyoming Wrestlers Dominate South Dakota State 35-9

The University of Wyomingwrestling team opened up its 2001-2002 dual season with a convincing35-9 victory over Division II power South Dakota State Thursday night inBrookings, S.D.

The Cowboys won eight of ten matches against the Jackrabbits includingone pin, one technical fall and three major decisions. Sophomore KevinKessner, from Rock Springs, Wyo., pinned Cole Strandemo at the 2:00 markin the first period to get the win at 184 pounds. Redshirt freshmanE.K. Waldhaus won by technical fall, defeating Mike Priebe 20-5. SeniorKelly McConville (133), junior Brad Steele (HWT) and redshirt freshmenJustin Salas (165) all won their matches by major decision.

Other winners for UW were senior Mark Hamrick at 141 pounds andsophomore Chad Plummer at 149 pounds. Sophomore Steve Cordova (125) wonhis match by forfeit.

SDSU led 3-0 after the first match to take a 3-0 lead after AaronVeskrna (157 pounds) defeated Wyoming's Levi Prevost 5-1. Salas won thenext match for the Pokes over Brian Walters, 15-4, to give Wyoming thelead for good at 4-3.

With the victory the Cowboys move to 1-0 on the season while SouthDakota State, who is ranked second in Division II, fall to 0-1. Wyomingwill return to action Saturday at the University of Nebraska-Omaha Open.
