In it's second major tournament ofthe season the University of Wyoming wrestling team had threeindividuals place in the top six in their weight class Saturday, Nov.17, at the University of Nebraska-Omaha Open in Omaha, Neb.
Junior Brad Steele and sophomore Andrew Shuler led the way for thePokes with fifth-place finishes in their respective weight classes.Steele went 6-2 on the day in the heavyweight division including twopins. Shuler, a transfer from Virginia Tech, won his fifth-place matchby pinning Iowa's Cory Connell. Shuler finished the day with a 5-3record.
UW's only other placer was redshirt freshman E.K. Waldhaus who finishedsixth in the 174 pound weight class.
"This tournament, like the Cowboy Open, was designed to find out wherewe stand," said Wyoming head coach Steven Suder. "We know a lot morenow then when we left for this meet. A positive from the tournament isthat the guys are beginning to understand the importance of maintainingtheir intensity."
Wyoming competed against national powers Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska andNorthern Iowa at the tournament along with many smaller schools from theMid-plains region.
The Cowboys will take a week off before returning to competition at theLas Vegas Invitational Nov. 30-Dec. 1. The tournament is considered oneof the top early season tournaments in the country.
