OMAHA, Neb. -
The University of Wyoming Cowboy wrestlers competed in the nation's largest single-day collegiate meet in the 2006 Kaufman/Brand Open at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse Saturday in Omaha, Neb.
"This is a great tournament," Wyoming Head Coach Steven Suder said. "The caliber of this tournament continues to get better every year, and this year was no exception."
Downing, a junior from Woodruff, Utah finished fourth in the Elite Division at the 149 pound weight class going 5-2 with two Major Decisions. Redshirt senior Sam Wendland made it to the semifinals in the 197 pound weight class, but was pulled from the tournament with an injury. "Sam was having a good day, but when he hurt himself we thought it was best this early in the season to not risk anything," Suder continued.
Freshman Jake Smith had another good weekend finishing third in the Amateur Division at the 197 pound weight class going 5-1. Smith had one pin and one sudden victory on the day.
Redshirt freshman Alex Rieder went 3-2 and finished in sixth place in the Amateur Division at the 157 pound weight class. Rieder recorded two Technical Falls and one pin.
"Those four guys battled really hard today. They all did a good job against some of the best competition in the country and I am proud of them," Suder added.
The Cowboys return to action in Primm, Nevada to compete in the Las Vegas Invitational on December 1-2. The tournament will begin at 9:00 a.m. and run all day.
