LINCOLN, Neb. -
The University of Wyoming Cowboy wrestling team dropped its first dual of the season on Saturday night in Lincoln, Neb. The No. 7 Huskers defeated the Pokes 35-4 in the Bob Devaney Sports Complex. Sophomore Bryce Meredith remained undefeated on the season picking up a major decision victory.
"They are a really good team and they don't have a lot of weaknesses," UW head coach Mark Branch said. "We didn't do enough and we had some opportunities. I thought we didn't show a lot of toughness and we want guys to go out there and battle."
Meredith got the Pokes off to a fast start with a dominating 13-4 major decision win over No. 8 Anthony Abidin. Meredith led 6-1 after the first period thanks to two takedowns and a nearfall. It was his first win over a ranked opponent at Wyoming and he remained perfect on the season at 6-0. He has won by pin, major decision or technical fall in five-of-his-six wins this season.
"Bryce was phenomenal and dominated and very good wrestler," Branch said. "He went out and listened to our coaching and excelled in every position tonight."
Junior No. 19 Drew Templeman fell just short in his match falling in sudden victory to No. 11 Tim Lambert. Templeman used an escape in the third period to force overtime. Fellow junior No. 11 Benjamin Stroh fell to No. 14 Micah Barnes via decision, 9-7. In the final match of the evening No. 20 Tanner Harms fell short in a 7-3 decision against No. 13 Collin Jensen.
