Cowboy Wrestlers Compete at Nebraska-Omaha Open

The University of Wyoming wrestlingteam traveled to Omaha, Neb. for the UNO-Open on Saturday. Four Cowboysplaced in the top six in their weight classes against some of the bestwrestlers in the country. The tournament featured the top three teams in thenation; Oklahoma State, Iowa and Minnesota.

In the open division junior Levi Prevost, currently ranked 18th in thenation in the 165 pound weight class, took home third place. Prevost battledhis way to the semifinals by defeating Blake Anderson from Iowa and BluWhale of Nebraska-Omaha then losing to #2 ranked Tyrone Lewis of OklahomaState 8-5. Prevost then defeated #14th ranked Nick Frost from Arizona State7-2, and then beat Hesston Johnson of Northern Iowa 6-2 in the consolationchampionship.

Senior heavyweight Brad Steele recorded a decision and a pin on his path tosemifinals before falling to #2 ranked Steve Mocco of Iowa. Steele thendefeated Michael Schedek of Northern Iowa to get to the consolationchampionship where he was defeated 5-2 by Dustin Darveaux of Saint Cloud.

Sophomore Justin Salas lost his first match in the 174 pound weight classand then won five consecutive matches to capture fifth place. In the under20 division 125 pounder Bryce Leonhardt won six matches in a row as hefought his way through the consolation bracket before losing to AaronGraumann of Augustana 3-2.

"This was one of the toughest UNO-Open's we have been to," said UW headwrestling coach Steven Suder following the tournament. "The top three teamsin the nation were here along with some other ranked teams like Nebraska andNorthern Iowa. Our guys continue to improve and it was real exciting to see.They are wrestling with more consistency every time they compete and we arelooking forward to seeing some of our young guys mature a little bit. It isgoing to be fun to watch these guys as they get better. Overall, I wasreally pleased with how our guys fought hard and wrestled tough."

The Cowboys are back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 26 when they host theUniversity of California-Davis at 7 p.m. in the Multipurpose Gym.
