The University of Wyoming wrestling team split up this last weekend, with the varsity squad traveling to Omaha, Nebraska, for the Nebraska-Omaha Open, and other members of the squad traveling to Pueblo, Colorado, for the Southern Colorado Open.
The Wyoming wrestling team had seven total placewinners in the Kaufman-Brand Open. Five placed in the open division while two placed in the 20-and-under division. Abe Boomer was the highest finisher for the Cowboys with a fourth-place finish in the heavyweight class. He lost his third-place match to Wes Hand of Iowa 11-6. Brandon Dansie and Steven Schenk both placed fifth and Chris Walker and Corey Hamrick notched sixth-place finishes. In the 20-and-under division, David Schenk and Brad Steele both placed fifth. There were wreslters from 26 different schools and some of the schools represented were Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Northern Iowa and Nebraska. No team scores were kept.
Wyoming took seven wrestlers to the USC Open on Sunday. Freshman Paul Turco won the championship in the 133-pound weight class. He went 4-0 on the day and won his championship match 14-12 over Andy Peters of AIr Force. There were no other placewinners.
