STILLWATER, Okla -
Match wins from sophomore Tyler Cox and senior Alfonso Hernandez were not enough for the University of Wyoming wrestling team to overcome No. 2 Oklahoma State on Saturday, as UW fell 31-8 to OSU in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The 20th-ranked Cowboys, now 2-2 overall, finished their road swing with a loss to OSU after a win over Oklahoma on Friday. Saturday's highlight came from Hernandez at 197 pounds, when the senior defeated OSU's Austin Schafer in a 14-7 decision for career victory No. 100. The senior, with 15 wins this year, trailed 3-0 in the second period, but went on a 14-4 run the rest of the way to come out on top. He became just the 15th UW wrestler in history to reach the century mark in wins.
Cox won his 14th match of the season at 125 pounds in the first bout of the night, beating OSU's Tyler Dorrell in a 20-5 technical fall for a 5-0 UW lead after one match. But OSU (3-0) reeled off seven-straight match wins to seal the victory.
UW senior Kasey Garnhart took on eighth-ranked Jon Morrison, and OSU won its first match of the night as Morrison got the 8-2 decision at 133. OSU scored three team points to cut the lead to 5-3. The 141-pound match was a tightly contested bout, as senior McCade Ford lost a narrow 4-3 decision to OSU's Julia Feikert, which gave OSU the 6-5 lead. The Stillwater Cowboys added to that lead when second-ranked Jordan Oliver pinned Wyoming's Brandon Richardson for six more team points at 149.
Wyoming suffered another setback at 157 pounds as 12th-ranked Cowboy Andy McCulley fell to 14th-ranked Alex Dieringer beat him in a 14-5 major decision. OSU led 16-5 after that. No. 3 Tyler Caldwell defeated UW's Dakota Friesth at 165 pounds in a 15-2 major decision to lead 20-5. Oklahoma State padded that lead after top-ranked Chris Perry defeated Wyoming's L.J. Helbig at 174 pounds in a 15-3 major decision.
After OSU's Chris Chionuma, ranked 17th, beat Shane Woods at 184 in a 13-4 major decision, Hernandez gave UW its last three team points.
Wyoming ended the night as redshirt freshman Tanner Harms gave the second-ranked Alan Gelogaev a battle at heavyweight, but the OSU wrestler secured the 8-5 win to give the Stillwater Cowboys a 31-8 dual victory.
The Cowboys are off until Dec. 16, when they travel to Reno, Nev., for the Reno Tournament of Champions.
