Grapplers Show Well in Las Vegas

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming wrestling team finished in 21st place at this weekends Las Vegas Invitational. The Pokes ended up with 28 team points. The only Cowboy to place was heavyweight Abe Boomer, who placed seventh.

Boomer went 5-2 during the two-day tournament. His only losses were to wrestlers ranked ahead of him in the national polls. Boomer won his seventh-place match over Demetrist Huff, the eighth seed, of Fresno State.

Also with strong showings for the Cowboys were Steve Schenk and Craig Rumsey. Schenk went 4-2 at the tournament and Rumsey was 2-2. For the season Schenk moved his record up to 10-5 and Rumsey went to 8-5.

The team champion was Illinois, who finished with 123 team points. Illinois was followed by Oregon State, Arizona State and Michigan.

The next action for Wyoming is on Dec. 11 when they host Wisconsin in a dual at 7:00 p.m. in the MultiPurpose Gymnasium in Laramie. Then on Sunday, Dec. 13, the Pokes take to the road and battle Nebraska in Lincoln.
