UW Wrestlers Come Up Short Against Fresno State

Dec. 10, 2005

FRESNO, Calif. -

The University of Wyoming wrestling team came up a little short in their first road dual of the year against Fresno State in Fresno, Calif., on Saturday. The Bulldogs came away with a close 24-18 victory, despite the Cowboys traveling without five of their starters.

The match started off well for the Pokes when 149 pound sophomore Kyle Dye registered his seventh pin of the season, defeating Lucas Anderson at the 5:56 mark to give the UW an early 6-0 lead. The Bulldogs then came back to rattle off 16 unanswered points that would include a forfeit from the Cowboys due to injury.

Redshirt freshman Mike White managed to put on some weight and wrestle for the Cowboys at 157 pounds. White lost to Andrew Meredith in a 13-5 major decision, cutting the UW lead to 6-4. After both teams forfeited at 165 pounds, redshirt freshman Dan Barrone was pinned by Fresno State's Charles Jones at the 2:00 mark. Then the Pokes forfeited the 184 pound bout making the score 16-6.

Wyoming then cut into the Fresno's lead with back to back victories by seniors Malcolm Havens and Dusty Hoffschneider. Havens recorded his first pin of the season when he put Miguel Rodriguez to his back at the 4:44 mark. Hoffschneider, wrestling in his first match of the season, defeated Cody Parker in a 4-3 decision and trimmed the Bulldog lead to 16-15.

In the 125 pound match, redshirt freshman Cody Grant saw his first varsity action as a Cowboy against Cody Borges. Borges proved to be to much for Grant as he won 7-3. Senior Tyson Shatto then brought the Pokes back with his 6-4 overtime victory over Sean Carlson putting the score 19-18 in favor of the Bulldogs. In the final match, Fresno State's Garrett Spooner defeated freshman Shay Lawrence by technical fall at the 4:57 mark, clinching the Bulldog's victory 24-18

"I was proud of the way our guys fought and wrestled hard in every match," said UW head coach Steven Suder.

Up next for the Cowboy Grapplers will be the Reno Tournament of Champions next Sunday, December 18. This will be their last competition until after the holiday season.
