AMES, Iowa -
The University of Wyoming wrestling team dropped a 19-14 decision to No. 19 Iowa State on Saturday afternoon in the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. Sophomores Bryce Meredith and Archie Colgan alongside junior Drew Templeman and senior Tanner Harms earned wins for the Pokes in the dual. Wyoming falls to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12, as Iowa State moves to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 duals.
"We had some really good and clutch performances and put ourselves in the driver seat," UW head coach Mark Branch said. "It was unfortunate that we let it slip away and I felt sorry for the guys that went out there and wrestled hard. We had an opportunity to do something great and make a statement."
Templeman got the Pokes off to a great start with a 9-1 major decision win over Kyle Larson at 125 pounds. Templeman recorded takedowns in each period and also added a point via riding time to earn the win. He moves to 6-1 on the season with his third major decision victory.
"Drew really set the tone and made us realize we could win and wrestled a flawless match," Branch said. "Archie had a pair of takedowns late and picked up a major decision that gave us a great opportunity to win going into the break."
After a major decision win by No. 6 Earl Hall of Iowa State against UW's redshirt freshman P.T. Garcia at 133 pounds. The Pokes' No.12 ranked Meredith earned a 3-2 decision over John Meeks at 141 pounds to give the Pokes a 7-4 lead over ISU. Meredith remains undefeated with a 7-0 mark and is 2-0 against members of the Big 12.
Iowa State once again tied the dual with No. 12 Gabe Moreno's 6-2 decision over junior Jake Elliott at 149 pounds. Colgan responded with a 12-4 major decision win over Logan Britenbach at 157 pounds. It was his third major decision win of the season, as it gave the Cowboys an 11-7 lead going into the break.
After the intermission, sophomore 165-pounder Kyle Pope battled No. 9 Tanner Weatherman to overtime battling back from a 12-5 deficit only to fall in extra time 18-16. From there the Cyclones won three more matches to seal the victory. Senior Tanner Harms, who is ranked No. 19 in the nation closed out the dual with a win over Quean Smith by a score of 3-1 in sudden victory. Harms moves to 5-1 on the season.
Wyoming returns to action next Friday evening hosting No. 7 Oklahoma State in their first home dual of the season at 7 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
