Wyoming Wrestlers Earn Victory Over Fresno State 20-16

The University of Wyoming Cowboywrestling team picked up its first dual win of the season with a 20-16victory over the Fresno State Bulldogs Saturday night at the MultipurposeGym in Laramie.

The Pokes won six of the ten matches on the night to clinch their firstvictory of the year. After UW lost their first two matches Cowboy juniorLevi Prevost got the Pokes on the scoreboard first with a 10-2 majordecision over Eddie Gifford of the Bulldogs to make the score 6-4 in favorof Fresno State. Prevost, currently ranked 12 in the nation according toIntermat Wrestling, now boasts a 16-3 record on the season.

In the 184 pound weight match Wyoming freshman Sam Wendland scored 14points on Fresno's Jatinder Singh to earn the decision, Wendland recordedthree takedowns in the match. After Wendland's match UW would win the nextfour matches. Junior Kevin Kessner upset the 19th ranked Marcio Botelho ofFresno in the 197 pound match 9-1 to earn a major decision and gave Wyomingthe first lead of the night 11-0. The Pokes wouldn't look back as Cowboysenior heavyweight Brad Steele, currently ranked 20th in the nation,recorded a takedown in the first period and another in the second to earn a6-2 victory over Clint Walbeck of Fresno to extend the Pokes team lead to14-10.

In the 125 pound match UW freshman Bryce Leonhardt scored two nearfall's inthe third period to clinch a 7-4 victory over Jordon Keckler and add to thelead making the score 17-10. In the last match of the night Cowboy freshmanTyson Shatto fought back from a 4-1 deficit and scored two takedowns and anearfall to win the 133 pound match against Joey Guiler 10-6 and push the UWlead to 20-10. The Pokes would forfeit the 141 pound match to make the finalscore 20-16.

"A win over Fresno State is a big win no matter what," said UW headwrestling coach Steven Suder after the dual Saturday night. "There were alot of things about the dual we were not satisfied with but I'm reallyimpressed by what some of the things our young guys did tonight."

"A lot of the things that happened out on the mat tonight is what I wouldsay is a reflection of what I have been really excited about so far thisseason. The hard work that has been going on in practice is showing out onthe mat, especially tonight."

The Pokes are off until Jan. when they travel to two dual tournaments; Jan.4th at the Lone Star Duals in Dallas, Tex. and Jan. 10 at the Virginia Dualsin Hampton, Virg.
