Wyoming Falls to No. 7 Oklahoma State in Home Dual Opener

The University of Wyoming wrestling team fell to No. 7 Oklahoma State 34-7 on Friday evening in the UniWyo Sports Complex in the Pokes' home dual opener. Wyoming cut into an early lead for Oklahoma State with a pair of wins by senior Austin Breckenridge and sophomore Archie Colgan, but OSU used the momentum of a pair of pins to pick up the win. Wyoming falls to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the Big 12, as the Pokes faced their third-straight ranked opponent. Oklahoma State moves to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in Big 12 duals.

"I expected more fight from our guys, they are a good team, but I'm not happy with that performance," UW head coach Mark Branch said. "I was proud Archie (Colgan) and Austin (Breckenridge). They went out there and fought hard and battled."

Oklahoma State took the first three matches of the night. Fifth ranked Eddie Kilmara downed sophomore Drew Templeman by decision 9-4 to open the dual. UW's P.T. Garcia fell to No. 10 Kaid Brock by technical fall 16-0. Wyoming sophomore Bryce Meredith, ranked No. 12 in the country fell to unanimous top-ranked Dean Heil by decision 5-4 in a hard fought match.

Breckenridge got the Cowboys on the board with a major decision win over Jonce Blaylock taking the match 13-3. Breckenridge led 9-3 after the first period with a pair of takedowns and a four-point nearfall with one second remaining in the period. Breckenridge moves to 11-3 on the season with his first major decision of the season.

Colgan had another strong outing defeating Chance Marsteller by decision 3-1. After a scoreless opening two periods, Colgan earned a quick reversal in the third to take a 2-0 lead. He also added a point with over two minutes of riding time to improve to 8-2 on the season and 6-1 against members of the Big 12 Conference. After the wins by Breckenridge and Colgan the Pokes' trimmed OSU's lead to 11-7.

Oklahoma State took a pair of matches via fall at 165-pounds and 174-pounds. OSU also added a pair of major decisions at 184-pounds and 197-pounds. The final match of the evening featured Wyoming senior Tanner Harms falling to No. 4 Austin Marsden of Oklahoma State by decision 5-3. Harms earned two escapes in the third period, but a takedown by Marsden proved to be the winner.

"I like going against the best in the nation," Branch said. "I expect big things from this team, but right now we just need to show more fight."

Wyoming returns to action on Sunday at the Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nev. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. MT.
