Three Cowboys earned nice wins, but the University of Wyoming wrestling team lost its third-straight dual of the year Friday against Oregon State, 26-12.

The Cowboys (1-3 overall) were victorious in the first bout, but dropped four-straight matches to the 24th-ranked Beavers (4-3 overall) to dig a 12-point deficit halfway through the dual. Junior Dakota Friesth got UW on the winning track after intermission, but the Beavers won three of the four remaining bouts to secure the team victory.

"It wasn't a great team effort. We got good individual performances, but we didn't wrestle our best and find a way to win those other close matches," Wyoming coach Mark Branch said. "There's no excuse for giving up bonus points in some of those situations. It's the little things we have to do right in those matches. We need to wrestle more inspired and step up to the challenge. We didn't win the matches we needed to."

Junior Tyler Cox, ranked 10th, started off the dual with a bang, dominating Oregon State's Pat Rollins in a 15-0 technical fall at 125 pounds. It was the 75th victory of Cox's career and 50th over his last two seasons.

The Beavers were aided by a UW forfeit at 133 pounds, and losses at the next three weights gave OSU a 17-5 lead. Friesth then came away with a close 6-5 decision over Alex Elder to give UW three team points at 165 pounds.

"That was a good victory for Dakota, especially after losing to (Elder) twice last season," Branch said.

After a loss at 174 pounds, redshirt freshman Benjamin Stroh earned his first career dual win, dominating Brian Engdahl in a 15-3 major decision at 184 pounds.

Wyoming's other two ranked wrestlers, Andy McCulley and Shane Woods, each lost their matches against ranked opponents. No. 20 McCulley lost a close 4-3 decision and No. 19 Woods dropped a 6-0 contest.

UW now turns its focus to the Reno Tournament of Champions, which takes place all day Sunday in Reno, Nev.
