With the majority of non-conference meetings behind it, the University of Wyoming wrestling team now turns its attention to Western Wrestling Conference action. The Pokes will face league foe South Dakota State on Sunday in a neutral-site meeting in Gillette, Wyo.

The details
The first match will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday from Campbell County High School North Campus. The wrestling competition is part of an outreach effort by Wyoming Athletics. The effort includes the Wyoming-Colorado State track dual on Saturday from the Campbell County Recreation Center.

A pre-match Cowboy Joe Club hospitality event for the wrestling dual will take place at Prairie Fire Brewing Co. (601 S. Douglas Hwy.) from noon-1:30 p.m. Sunday, featuring food and drink specials.

A look at the Cowboys
Now 1-5 in duals, Wyoming hopes the beginning of conference action is the spark for which it has been looking. The Cowboys, ranked 23rd in the dual/tournament-poll, will seek their first win since the season opener.

Three UW competitors appear in the national rankings this week: junior Tyler Cox, junior Dakota Friesth and redshirt freshman Benjamin Stroh. Cox is rated as high as eighth at 125 pounds, Friesth is 18th at 165 and Stroh is 15th at 184.

A look at the Jackrabbits
SDSU is 1-3 in dual action, with losses to Drexel, North Dakota State and Nebraska, and a win over Augustana.

One Jackrabbit is ranked in the national polls, 157-pounder Cody Pack, who is 18th.

Last time/series history
A wire-to-wire lead powered Wyoming to a 21-13 dual victory over South Dakota State on Jan. 20, 2013, in Spearfish, S.D. The Pokes earned six match victories on the campus of Black Hills State University to defeat the Jackrabbits. The Jacks wouldn't go away quietly, as they made the margin 10-9 UW after six bouts. But Wyoming used wins from L.J. Helbig (174 pounds), Shane Woods (184) and Alfonso Hernandez to seal the victory.

Since 1954, UW is 14-0 versus South Dakota State.
