LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Another conference dual awaits the University of Wyoming wrestling team Thursday, as the Cowboys will travel to the Air Force Academy to take on the Falcons. Matches begin at 7 p.m. MT from Clune Arena.
Eleventh-ranked Wyoming (5-2 overall, 2-0 Western Wrestling Conference) will aim to keep its winning streak alive. The Pokes will try to win their sixth straight dual and stay atop the WWC standings.
The Falcons (7-4 overall, 2-2 WWC) will try to stay in the conference race with a win.
UW has won 35 of 47 meetings with the Falcons all-time. Last season, Wyoming defeated Air Force in Laramie 32-12.
"We're going to try to get prepared and make sure we don't get caught off-guard," Wyoming coach Mark Branch said. "I definitely don't want my team to overlook Air Force. They always wrestle tough. I think their (conditioning) is always good, they wrestle a hard pace and their kids battle. I do want our kids to start developing confidence. I want them to understand that no matter who our opponent is, we come out and we prepare the same."
Air Force has one of the top wrestlers in the nation at 149 pounds, as junior Cole VonOhlen is third in the country in the InterMat rankings.
Wyoming features five ranked wrestlers, including senior Michael Martinez (18th, 125 pounds), redshirt freshman Zach Zehner (17th, 133), senior Shane Onufer (3rd, 165), senior Joe LeBlanc (1st, 184) and junior Alfonso Hernandez, ranked eighth at 197 pounds.
On the road again
Wyoming will wrestle its third dual on the road this season. So far, the Pokes have split meetings with Nebraska (L, 19-15) and Oregon State (W, 23-22) away from Laramie. Air Force is undefeated at home this season at 2-0.
