LARAMIE, Wyo. -
As an important step towards the postseason, the Wyoming Cowboy wrestlers have had six starters listed in the second of three coaches' panel rankings and the first Rating Percentage Index (RPI) for the 2009-10 season, announced on Friday, Feb. 12 by the NCAA.
The final rankings and RPI will be two of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
Automatic bids can be earned by the 'Pokes, as well as other members of the Western Wrestling Conference, at the NCAA West Regional Tournament, which will take place March 6 in Brookings, S.D. and is hosted by South Dakota State University.
Once the automatic bids have been earned, and to fill the remaining slots in each weight class, a very small number of at-large bids will then be awarded by the NCAA after all qualifier tournaments have been completed.
Last season, the NCAA West Regional Tournament was awarded 13 automatic qualifiers. The WWC was also given one additional at-large bid for a total of 14 spots. Wyoming took four of those automatic qualifier slots, as Martinez (125), VomBaur (133), Onufer (174) and LeBlanc (184) each won their respective weight classes at the West Regional.
In last Friday's rankings announcement, the WWC had 22 wrestlers listed, a significant increase over last season.
Wrestlers in each weight class will be measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches' rankings to earn spots for the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The three-day event will be held in Omaha, Neb., March 18-20 at the Qwest Center Omaha.
The coaches' rankings are compiled three times during the season by a vote of coaches across the nation. Each qualifying tournament has five coaches rank the top 33 wrestlers in two weight classes. For ranking purposes, coaches must select a wrestler as a starter at a designated weight class. In addition, coaches may only select one wrestler per weight class.
To be eligible for an RPI ranking, a wrestler must have a minimum of 15 Division I matches at a given weight class. The top 33 wrestlers in the RPI are listed for each weight class. At the time of the rankings last week, VomBaur had only 14 qualifying matches at 133 pounds, which is why he did not appear on the list.
