The picture for the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships got a little clearer Wednesday, as the NCAA released the brackets for the national tournament March 17-19 in Madison Square Garden in New York.
"When you get there every matchup is tough," UW head coach Mark Branch said. "To make something happen in this tournament you have to be prepared to wrestle your best and look for some upsets. We know who our first round matchups are and we'll concentrate on that."
Three University of Wyoming wrestlers earned automatic bids to the event at the Big 12 Championship. Senior Tanner Harms finished second at the Big 12 Championship with sophomore Bryce Meredith finishing third and junior Drew Templeman finishing fourth.
Meredith is the Pokes' highest seeded wrestler coming in 14th. Harms is seeded 15th with Templeman heading to the tournament unseeded. Meredith will meet up with Arizona State's Robbie Mathers, as he earned an automatic bid to the tournament at the Pac-12 Championship. Harms will also meet an unseeded wrestler in Columbia's Garrett Ryan, as he earned an at-large bid on Wednesday.Templeman's first round opponent will be eighth seeded MAC Champion Barlow McGhee.
"We have to limit our mistakes next week," Branch said. "We have to go out there and look at what we need to do to be successful in the first round and go from there."
Here's a breakdown of the first-round opponent for each of Wyoming's Three NCAA qualifiers:
