Cowboy Wrestlers Ready for NCAA Championships

The most exciting time of the year has arrived for the Wyoming Cowboy wrestling team as it gets ready to compete at the NCAA Championships March 15-17 in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Wyoming's Nick Ramirez (125), Cory VomBaur (133), Carter Downing (149), and Sam Wendland (197) have earned the opportunity to compete on the national stage.

"We are excited to get this tournament going," UW head coach Steven Suder said. "We have been preparing for this all year and we are ready to compete."

Ramirez, a redshirt freshman, will begin the tournament facing Brandon Precin of Northwestern in the 125 pound division. Ramirez went 22-13 this season and finished the Western Wrestling Conference season 5-0.

VomBaur, also a redshirt freshman, will face #6 seeded Darrell Vasquez of Cal-Poly in the opening round of the 133 pound division. VomBaur went 17-13 on the year and 4-1 in WWC action.

Both Ramirez and VomBaur earned wild-card selections into the national championship.

Downing, a junior, opens the tournament against #6 seeded J.P. O'Conner from Harvard in the 149 pound division. Downing wrapped up the regular season with a record of 32-7, 5-0 in the WWC, earning his second consecutive West Region title which earned him an automatic bid.

Wendland, Wyoming's lone senior, will face #12 seeded Dallas Herbst of Wisconsin in the opening round of the 197 pound division. Wendland went 15-1 this season, 4-0 in the WWC and won his second West Regional Championship also earning him an automatic bid.

"We pride ourselves on being ready for that first match of the tournament and that is what we have done. I feel all four will represent Wyoming well," Suder said.
