Wyoming Wrestling Program Signs Malcolm Havens

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

University of Wyoming head wrestlingcoach Steven Suder has announced the signing of Malcolm Havens ofPonderosa High School in Parker, Colo., to a national letter-of-intent.

Havens placed second at the 5A Colorado State Championships this pastseason at 215 pounds. He finished the season with an overall record of39-1. Havens also placed second as a junior with an overall record of36-4. As a sophomore Havens finished third at 215 pounds with a recordof 32-5. Havens finished his three-year career with 69 pins, including28 his senior season.

In each of his last three years at Ponderosa High School Havens earnedthe Most Falls and Most Takedowns Awards along with earning the mostteam points of any individual wrestler. Havens was coached in highschool by Tim Ottmann.

In the spring of 2001 Havens won the senior freestyle division at theRocky Mountain Regionals in the 213 pound weight class. Havens placedsecond at the prestigious Western Junior Regionals in Las Vegas, Nev.,this April and also placed fourth at the Reno Tournament of Champions inDecember.

At the University of Wyoming Havens plans to study kinesiology. He isthe son of Dan and Laura Havens.

"Malcolm is a great addition to our program for several reasons," saidWyoming head wrestling coach Steven Suder. "He is very serious abouthis academics, he trains year-round and he is always looking for hisnext challenge. He adds quality, experienced depth to our upperweights, which will benefit him as well as the rest of the athletes inthe program."
