University of Wyoming head wrestling coach Steven Suder announced Tuesday the signing of Ryan Kotzea of Aberdeen, S.D. to a national letter of intent.
Kotzea was a two-time South Dakota State Champion in the heavyweight division while attending Aberdeen Central High School. He was also a three-time All-Conference wrestler as well as being a team captain his junior and senior seasons. While at Aberdeen Central, Kotzea recorded three consecutive 30-win seasons and finished his career with an outstanding 97-9 overall record. The heavyweight, who his teammates called "The Big Cat", also placed second at the 2003 High School Senior National Wrestling Tournament.
"My visit to Laramie was really great," said Kotzea."I was really impressed with the facilities and the waycoach Suder and his staff run the program. I knew that if I decided on Wyoming that I would be in good hands."
In the classroom, Ryan accumulated a 3.2 grade pointaverage and was twice awarded as an honor student-athlete.He plans on majoring in secondary education at UW. He is the son of Dale and Deb Kotzea.
"Ryan had several opportunities to go elsewhere involvinga couple of sports," commented UW head coach Steven Suder."In our opinion, he belongs in Division I. He is a highly motivated guy with a great work ethic, which is sometimes hard to find in heavyweights. We think has the talent to have a great career here at Wyoming."
