The University of Wyoming wrestling team opens the season this weekend with the Northern Colorado Open in Greeley, Colo. A select few Cowboy wrestlers will take part in the season opener while others will wait until next weekend's Cowboy Open.
Action for the one day tournament is slated to open on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. MT in the Bank of Colorado Arena.
A Look at Wyoming
Wyoming returns two NCAA qualifiers in senior Tanner Harms and junior Benjamin Stroh. The Pokes also return four other starters from last season and 18 overall wrestlers. Wyoming added 15 newcomers to this season's roster.
A challenging conference schedule awaits the University of Wyoming wrestling program in the inaugural season in the Big 12 Conference. The Pokes will face every team in the conference with the exception of West Virginia. Wyoming will wrestle six teams that are ranked in the USA Today/NWCA Preseason Poll.
The Cowboys are coming off an 11-4 campaign in 2014-15 that featured a seven-dual winning streak. The Cowboys finished second in the Western Wrestling Conference Championships and qualified six competitors for the NCAA Championships.
UW head coach Mark Branch enters his eighth season at the helm, boasting a 74-32 overall record and a 30-4 mark in conference action.
He Said It
"This is a fun time of the year, but practice gets a little tedious and the guys are getting anxious," Branch said. "You really know what you have in your team and we will have a good idea of how our workouts have been going."
"Every day we have a nice mix of workout partners," Branch said. "Rotating partners allows us to help us with our development and our mental game as well."
The Cowboys host the annual Cowboy Open in War Memorial Field House next Saturday.
