Spurred on by two weight-class titles, the University of Wyoming wrestling program opened the 2014-15 season on a positive note Saturday in the Northwest Open.
Eight Pokes placed fourth or higher, including tournament crowns from sophomore Jake Elliott (149 pounds) and redshirt freshman Archie Colgan at 157. Several young Cowboys saw their first collegiate action, including four true freshmen.
Colgan went 4-0 with one technical fall and defeated redshirt freshman teammate Kyle Pope in the 157-pound title tilt in a 7-3 decision. The Cowboys went 1-2-3 at 157, as sophomore Tanner Miller finished third with four wins.
At 149, Elliott moved to 4-0 and upended Jeff McCormick of Northwest Wyoming in the championship final, 3-1. Other notable finishes included true freshman P.T. Garcia appearing in the 133-pound final, dropping a tough 3-2 decision to finish as the runner-up.
Junior Austin Breckenridge was third at 149 with four wins, while sophomore Gunnar Woodburn was fourth at 125 with four victories. Redshirt freshman Luke Paine took third place at 174 with three victories.
The Cowboys have a stern test upcoming as they welcome No. 7 Nebraska to Laramie on Friday. The first match begins at 3 p.m. in the Indoor Practice Facility.
