The University of Wyoming wrestling team wraps up its road swing this weekend heading to Ames, Iowa to take on No. 19 Iowa State at the Hilton Coliseum at 1 p.m. MT on Saturday. It will be the first meeting between the schools since 1987.
A Look at Wyoming
A trio of Cowboys find themselves in the national rankings. Junior Ben Stroh, who moved to 174 pounds is ranked as high as 13th in the nation by Intermat Wrestling. He is also ranked 16th by FloWrestling and 17th by Amateur Wrestling News. Senior 285 pounder Tanner Harms is ranked 19th by Amateur Wrestling News and 20th by Intermat Wrestling. New in the rankings is sophomore Bryce Meredith. He is ranked 11th by FloWrestling and ranks 12th by Amateur Wrestling News.
After a great performance on the mat at Nebraska, Meredith (Cheyenne, Wyo./North Carolina State) was named the Big 12 Conference wrestler of the Week on Nov. 24. Meredith got the Pokes off to a fast start with a dominating 13-4 major decision win over No. 8 Anthony Abidin of Nebraska.
A Look at Iowa State
The Cyclones head into the weekend ranked No. 19 in the USA Today/NWCA Poll. Iowa State is 2-2 on the season with wins over Midland University and Boise State. ISU fell to Virginia Tech and Iowa, who are both ranked in the top-10. Iowa State's top competitor is 133-pounder Earl Hall, as he ranks sixth in the nation. Another top grappler is Tanner Weatherman at 165 pounds, as he ranks ninth in the nation.
He Said it
"It has been a long layoff and I know the coaching staff is feeling like the student-athletes and we are eager to get back on the mat," Branch said.
"It is a new experience and a new opponent for us," Branch said. "We feel very fortunate to have them on the schedule and with them being a traditional Big 12 team. It will be a challenge, but we look forward to heading there and competing well against them.
The Cowboys and the Cyclones will meet for the first time since the 1987. A tie into the last meeting between the two teams is freshman Willy Cogdill, as his father Jon wrestled against the Cyclones in that dual. Iowa State leads the all-time series with a mark of 13-1.
