OREM, Utah - University of Wyoming 197-pound junior Shane Woods (Tuttle, Okla./Tuttle HS) was named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week after an outstanding performance on the mat last week. The conference award was announced Tuesday by the league.
Woods picked up the biggest win of his career last weekend, knocking off the 11th-ranked wrestler in the nation in a gritty match Saturday. Wyoming fell to fifth-ranked Oklahoma State by a score of 30-6, but Woods powered his way to a 3-2 decision over OSU's Blake Rosholt, a 2013 All-American, at 197 pounds. The UW junior secured a takedown with less than a minute elapsed in the first period for a 2-0 lead. Rosholt later tied it up with two escapes, but a Woods escape with 1:53 remaining in the third period gave him a 3-2 lead, one he wouldn't relinquish. The win was Woods' first over a ranked opponent in his career.
With the victory, Woods improves to 11-3 on the season and is now ranked in the top 20 for the first time in his career, as he is currently 19th in the latest Amateur Wrestling News poll.
The conference honor is Woods' first of the season and first of his career.
The Western Wrestling Conference, which is in its eighth year of competition, is comprised of six schools including the Air Force Academy, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming.
