OREM, Utah - University of Wyoming 165-pound senior Shane Onufer (Auburn, Wash./Auburn HS) has been named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week by the league on Tuesday after a stellar showing on the mat last week.
Onufer won his fourth tournament of the year Sunday, when he took home the 165-pound crown at the Reno Tournament of Champions. He went a perfect 4-0 through the bracket with one fall and one major decision.
The Wyoming senior defeated Binghamton's Matt Kaylor, Oregon State's Joe Latham and Michigan State's David Cheza en route to the championship bout against Oklahoma State's Dallas Bailey. Onufer then went on to defeat the 20th-ranked Bailey by decision, 7-4, in the finals. For the year Onufer now is 15-1 overall.
The conference award is Onufer's second of the season and sixth of his career. The Wyoming grappler currently is ranked No. 6 in the country in the InterMat poll at 165 pounds.
The Western Wrestling Conference, which is in its sixth year of competition, is comprised of seven schools including the Air Force Academy, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming.
