OREM, Utah - University of Wyoming 165-pounder Shane Onufer (Auburn, Wash./Auburn HS) was named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week by the league Tuesday after an outstanding performance on the mat last week.
Onufer was named Outstanding Wrestler at the Reno Tournament of Champions after he took first place in the 165-pound division. He finished with a perfect 6-0 record at the tournament which included a 10-2 major decision victory in the title match over No. 13 Ryan DesRoches of Cal Poly. The junior recorded two major decisions and a pin.
Onufer also helped lead Wyoming to the team title at the Reno tournament for the first time in its history, edging Boise State by 1.5 points for the tournament crown.
The conference award is Onufer's first of the season and fourth of his career.
The Western Wrestling Conference, which is in its fifth year of competition, is comprised of seven schools including the Air Force Academy, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming.
