LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming Wrestling team was proudly represented by three Cowboy wrestlers as they competed at the 45th annual Midlands Wrestling Invitational Tournament hosted by Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., December 29-30. Senior Carter Downing and sophomore Cory VomBaur both placed in the national tournament.
"This is a very competitive and prestigious tournament that our guys were invited to," UW Associate Head Coach Matt Johnson said. "I am proud of our showing and I think we made a statement to the rest of the country that we have some talented guys."
UW's Downing went 5-1 and took fifth place in the 141 pound division and VomBaur went 4-3 and took sixth place in the 133 pound division.
"Both Carter (Downing) and Cory (VomBaur) wrestled well this weekend," Johnson continued. "Cory has had a tough time as of late but really got back to the way we knew he could perform. It was nice to be able to have Carter back and we are looking forward to having him for the second half of the season. Overall it was a real shot in the arm for us to have these guys wrestle so well and have some people from around the country really take notice of us. We are looking forward to getting the rest of the guys back from break and hit the second half of our season with some energy."
The Cowboys will return to action next Saturday, January 5th, as they head to South Grand Prairie, Texas to compete in the Lone Star Duals. Action will begin at 9 a.m. and run all day.
