Laramie, Wyoming - For the first time this season, the Cowgirl basketball team (4-7 overall) has put together a three game winning streak with a 69-60 victory over the Navy Midshipmen (6-7 overall) on Sunday afternoon in Laramie.
It took the Cowgirls a few minutes to score, but they would eventually take the early 9-4 lead. Navy responded with a 7-2 run to even things at eleven, then it was up to the Cowgirls as they would score the next eight of ten points to go back up 19-13. The Midshipmen again answered with another 8-0 run to take only their second lead of the game, 21-19. The young Wyoming team kept their composure and closed out the half on a 14-4 run to take a 33-25 lead in to the locker room.
Ashley Elliott led all scorers with 19 points, while shooting a perfect 5-5 from the field and beyond the arc. She also finished with five boards to lead the Cowgirls. As a team, Wyoming was 9-19 (.474) from the field and 6-12 (.500) from the three-point line.
Navy was led by Kate Maslowski and Courtney Davidson who both finished with nine points. Two Midshipmen finished with three rebounds each. Navy was 9-25 (.360) from the field.
After the Cowgirls took a ten point lead right out of halftime, Navy answered with an 8-1 run to pull within three, 36-33. Wyoming came back and scored the next ten of 15 to regain another eight point advantage. With ten minutes left in the game, a foul by Navy's Courtney Davidson on Ashley Elliott really seemed to shift the momentum the Cowgirls way as they scored nine straight to open up a 57-40 lead. Down 62-44, the Midshipmen continued to battle until the end by out scoring Wyoming 16-7 in the final five minutes of the game falling short in their come back 69-60.
Three Cowgirls finished in double-digits on the afternoon, including Ashley Elliott. She finished the night with a game high 28 points and seven rebounds, along with six assists. Freshman Michelle Lieber had a career day as she recorded a 14 points and 13 rebounds for her third double-double in a row, while guard Tarah LaPar chipped in 12 points. Wyoming was 21-50 (.420) from the field, while out rebounding the Midshipmen 37-30.
Navy was led by Courtney Davidson who finished with 25 points, followed by Kate Maslowski with 11. Forward Adrienne Roseti led the team with eight rebounds while chipping in six points. The Midshipmen were 20-50 (.400) from the field.
"We had a big effort from Ashley Elliott today," said head coach Joe Legerski. "The last game out she really struggled from the field, and tonight they chased her everywhere on the court but those shots fell and she finished the game with 28 points. That's the kind of effort we need from her, and she really kept us in the game during the first half.
"I'm extremely pleased with the growth of this team," added Legerski. "We're the same group as we were in October, young, continuing to get better and learning how to do things. Tarah LaPar has really come on and that's made a big difference in our perimeter game. Michelle Lieber has been unbelievable the last three games. She's had a career high three double-doubles and they've come back to back to back. We've been missing that inside presence from the beginning of the season, and Michelle has really been able to fill that void."
The Cowgirls will now head out on the road to face the Weber State Wildcats, on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m., in Odgen before returning home to play their final non-conference game on Saturday afternoon against the Eastern Washington Eagles.
