The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team (10-2 overall, 0-1 in the MWC) had a struggle in their opening conference game as they fell, 65-56, to the UNLV Lady Rebels (9-3 overall, 1-0 in the MWC) on Thursday night in Las Vegas, Nev.

The Cowgirls were led by senior Erin Hicks who finished with a team high 17 points. She was 3-8 from the field and a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line. Jodi Bolerjack followed with 14 points. Megan McGuffey led in rebounding with five. Wyoming shot 16-53 (.302) from the field and 4-23 (.174) from beyond the arc.

UNLV was led by Sheena Moore with 17 points and seven assists. They were 23-50 (.460) from the field and out rebounded the Cowgirls by nine, 40-31.

It was very low scoring in the first several minutes of the game as the two teams combined for ten points as the Lady Rebels took an early 7-3 lead. UNLV increased their advantage to six, 13-7, while the Cowgirls really struggled on the offensive end of the court. They wouldn't reach double-figures until the six minute mark of the half and during that time the Lady Rebels went on an 8-4 run to take their largest lead of the half, 24-15. Despite all of that, the Cowgirls went in to the locker room down only six, 24-18.

The Cowgirls were led in scoring at the half by senior Erin Hicks, who finished with six, while Jodi Bolerjack had five. Freshman Megan McGuffey finished with a team leading four rebounds. Wyoming shot a disappointing 7-25 (.280) from the field and 1-11 (.091) from beyond the arc. The Lady Rebels were led by Sherry McCracklin with nine points and five rebounds. UNLV shot 8-26 (.308) from the field and out rebounded Wyoming 23-17.

Wyoming hit a couple of free throws to begin the second half to pull within four, 24-20, unfortunately a 9-4 run by UNLV gave them a double-figure lead 33-22. A Megan McGuffey basket brought UW to within nine, but UNLV came back with two quick buckets to take a 12-point advantage, 37-25. The Cowgirls continued to battle and went on an 8-0 run to make it a four point game, 37-33. It wouldn't last though as the Lady Rebels scored the next 13 of 17 points to retake a double-figure lead, 50-37. Down by 13, Wyoming made one more attempt to comeback and went on a 9-2 run to pull within six, unfotunately they wouldn't get any closer. UNLV would hit several free throws at the end to earn the 65-56 victory.

The Cowgirls will host their first home conference game on Saturday, Jan. 7 against the TCU Horned Frogs. The game is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
