Portland, Oregon -- The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball Team (9-3 overall) earned a 76-67 victory over the Portland Pilots (6-7 overall), on Wednesday in Portland, Oregon.
Each team traded baskets to begin the first half, but with the Pilots up by one point the Cowgirls would go on an 8-0 run to take a 14-7 advantage. A couple of buckets by Portland closed them to within four points, which didn't last long as Wyoming scored 11 unanswered to take a 14 point lead. The Pilots continued to hang in the half behind several three-point shots by Whitney Grant and Ashlee Giles to tighten the score up, but the Cowgirls would still take a 10-point lead into halftime, 38-28.
The leading scorer was senior Ann McColl with 11, while Darci Arsene was the top rebounder with five for the Cowgirls. Khalila O'Rielly-Williams and Ashlee Giles were the top scorers for Portland with eight.
Wyoming came out strong to start the second half by scoring ten of 13 to widen their margin to 48-31. Portland continued to battle by being aggressive and going on a 20-15 run to close within 12 points, but the Cowgirls seemed to have an answer each time to maintain a double-digit lead. There was no giving up by the Pilots as they made another run at the Cowgirls to pull within their closest margin of five points. It would come down to free throws by Ashley Elliott and a basket by Chassie Wiersma in the final minute for the Cowgirls to seal the 76-67 victory.
Four players finished the night in double-figures including Darci Arsene, who finished with a double-double. She had a game high 18 points and 11 rebounds. As a team, the Cowgirls were 32-51 (.627) from the field.
The leading scorer and rebounder for the Pilots was Khalila O'Rielly-Williams with 23 points and nine rebounds. Portland shot 43% (23-53) from the field.
The Cowgirls will wrap up non-conference play over the weekend as they will host the Montana State Bobcats, on Saturday afternoon, at 1:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium.
