LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team rebounded with a 55-48 win over the Boise State Broncos, on Saturday afternoon, in Laramie. The Cowgirls are now 11-3 overall on the season and 2-1 in conference action, while the Broncos are 6-8 overall and 1-2 in MW play.
Kaitlyn Mileto finished with 18 points while shooting 6-10 (.600) from the field and 2-3 (.667) from beyond the arc. Marquelle Dent recorded 12 points while Fallon Lewis and Kayla Woodward each chipped in nine. Lewis led the way with 11 rebounds. The Cowgirls were 18-54 (.333) from the field and 15-26 (.577) from the free throw line.
Boise State had three players in double-figures led by Miquelle Askew and Yaiza Rodriguez with 12 each. Lexie Der recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds on the night. The Broncos were 19-62 (.306) from the field and 4-16 (.250) form beyond the arc.
"At halftime, probably the biggest thing I thought about was on the playground when someone gets fouled you can either take the ball out or shoot a free throw, and the way we shot free throws in the first half I was hoping for a rule change," said head coach Joe Legerski. "In the second half when it really mattered we stepped up and made some big shots. To go from 33 to 78 percent, it tells me about their focus to be able step up and get things done in the last four to eight minutes. I thought Kaitlyn played both ends of the floor very well. She plays calm on the offensive end and challenges people defensively. We also asked her to grab a few rebounds along the way. Jasmine Davis and Kaylee Hoffman gave us a lift in the first half when we had some people get into some foul trouble. That was important to hang onto the lead with two starters on the bench."
The Broncos scored first on a Lexie Der field goal, but Wyoming scored six unanswered to take a 6-2 lead. Four points from Der evened up the score at six. A field goal by Mileto would end a small scoreless drought for Wyoming followed by a Lewis layup gave the Cowgirls a 10-6 advantage. Boise State responded with a 6-2 run to tie the score up at 12 all with 10:15 left in the first half. The two teams traded baskets and then a three-point field goal by Woodward made it 17-14. The Cowgirls would extend the lead to eight, 24-16 by scoring seven of the next nine points. A three-point play by Der would end a four minute drought for the Broncos. Wyoming would get out scored the final four minutes of the half, but still took a 28-26 lead into the locker room.
Mileto led all scorers for the Cowgirls with eight followed by Woodward with seven points and four rebounds. Wyoming was 11-25 (.440) from the field but just 4-12 (.333) from the free throw line. The Broncos were led by Der with nine points and five rebounds. Rodriguez added five points while two other players had three points. BSU was 10-31 (.323) from the field and 3-3 (1.00) from the free throw line.
Boise State came out in the second half and scored the first four points to regain the lead 30-28. A three-point field goal by Mileto gave the Cowgirls a one-point advantage, 31-30, but the Broncos quickly hit a shot to go up 32-31 with 15:30 left in the game. A basket from Dent would start a 5-2 run from Wyoming to give them a two-point lead, 36-34. Rodriguez hit a shot to make it 36 all and then both teams went cold. Finally a shot by the Broncos ended a two-minute drought for them and then a basket by Mileto ended a five-minute scoreless stretch for the Cowgirls and then a three-point play by Lewis gave UW the two-point lead, 41-39. Tonisha Childress hit a shot out of the media timeout to even it back up at 41 all with 7:52 on the clock. Five straight points by Wyoming would give them a five-point lead, 46-41. The Broncos battled back and ran off six straight to go back up by one, 47-46. Mileto hit a jumper and a foul shot next time down the court to start a 7-0 run to give them a six point lead, 53-47. Deanna Weaver hit one of two free throws to give Boise State their only point in the final 3:35 of the game. Lewis hit two free throws with under a minute to go in the game to give Wyoming the 55-48 victory.
The Cowgirls will return to action next Saturday, Jan. 18, as they travel to face MW newcomer San José State. The game is set for 3:00 p.m. MT in San Jose.
