Salt Lake City, Utah -- The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team (10-5 overall, 1-1 in the MWC) closed out their first weekend of Mountain West Conference play with a 67-49 loss against the Utah Utes (13-4 overall, 2-0 in the MWC), on Saturday afternoon in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Utah stormed out to take the early lead with seven unanswered points through the first several minutes of the game. The Cowgirls struggled going almost four minutes before a Hanna Zavecz jumper broke the scoring drought, which was then followed up with a 9-2 scoring run by Wyoming who took their first lead of the game 11-9. It was short lived as the Utes scored the next 11 of 12 to regain their largest lead of the game 21-12. The Cowgirls continued to battle and went on an 11-4 scoring run to pull within three, 25-22, but Utah would end the half on a 5-2 scoring run of their own to take a 30-24 lead in to the locker room.
The Cowgirls were led in the first half by Hanna Zavecz who finished with nine points and three steals. She was followed by Erin Hicks and Ashley Elliott with six points, while Dominique Sisk was the leading rebounder with three. Wyoming was 7-21 (.333) from the field, but committed nine turnovers in the half.
Utah was led by Shona Thorburn who had nine points followed by Kim Smith with eight points and a team leading nine rebounds. The Utes shot 12-28 (.429) from the field while out rebounding the Cowgirls 20-14.
The two teams traded baskets in the early going of the second half as they Utes continued to maintain their lead, 34-26. Wyoming bounced back with five unanswered to pull to within five, 31-36, but a quick three-point field goal by Utah's Shona Thorburn gave them a 39-31 advantage. A Hanna Zavecz basket brought the score to 39-33, unfortunately the Utes answered back with a 9-0 run to open up a 48-33 score, while the Cowgirls went almost four minutes without a score. Wyoming tried to make one final push and pulled to within 17, 62-45, but that's as close as it would get. The Utes came away with the 67-49 victory.
Three Cowgirls finished the night in double-digits, including junior Erin Hicks. She finished with a team high 17 points and seven rebounds. Hanna Zavecz had 13 points, while Ashley Elliott recorded 11. Wyoming was 17-48 (.354) from the field, while shooting a dismal 3-15 (.200) from beyond the arc.
Utah was led by Shona Thorburn who finished with 27 points followed by Kim Smith with 18 points. The Utes shot 25-57 (.439) from the field and 6-14 (.429) from the three-point line.
The Cowgirls will host their first two conference games of the season as they welcome the UNLV Lady Rebels, on Thursday night, and the San Diego State Aztecs, on Saturday afternoon.
