San Diego, Calif. -- The Wyoming basketball team (6-10 overall, 2-1 in the MWC) continued Mountain West Conference play on the road with a 71-60 win against the San Diego State Aztecs (5-10 overall, 0-2 in the MWC) on Thursday night.

The Cowgirls jumped out quickly with two three point field goals to gain an early 6-2 advantage, but San Diego State answered back with a 9-3 run to take their first lead 11-9. After the Aztec lead grew to four points, Wyoming responded by scoring the next twelve of fourteen points to take one of their largest leads of the half 21-15. San Diego State struggled from the field going almost four minutes without a field goal before a Michelle Elliott three point field goal broke the streak. In the final minutes of the half and the Cowgirls up 24-20, UW finished strong by out scoring the Aztecs 11-5 to take a 35-24 lead in to the locker room.

Junior Ashley Elliott led all scorers with 13 points followed by Brenda Pickup with eight. Elliott also led the way with five rebounds. Wyoming was 13-24 (.542) from the field, while out rebounding the Aztecs 15-8. San Diego State was led by Michelle Elliott, who finished with ten points. SDSU was 8-18 (.444) from the field.

Wyoming picked up were they left off in the first half by scoring the first four points to open up a 39-24 advantage, but SDSU answered back with six straight points to pull them to within nine 39-30. After a couple of quick baskets from the Cowgirls opened up a double-digit lead, the Aztecs made a 7-2 scoring run which brought them to within eight points, the closest they'd been since late in the first half. UW kept their composure and scored the next ten of thirteen to regain a 55-40 lead. Unfortunately, the Aztecs weren't going away as seven unanswered points once again brought them to within eight points, 55-47, but the Cowgirls answered right back with five straight to regain a 13 point lead. Despite a battle until the end from the Aztecs, Wyoming held their own and came away with the 71-60 victory.

Three Cowgirls finished the night in double figures, including guard Ashley Elliott. She finished with a game high 26 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Senior Brenda Pickup recorded 14 points followed by freshman Michelle Lieber with 11. Wyoming shot 21-43 (.488) from the field and 25-36 (.694) from the free throw line.

Guard Veronica Shaw finished her night with 17 points to lead the Aztecs, while Ashlee Dunlap recorded a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds. SDSU was 23-51 (.451) from the field.

"I was extremely pleased with the effort from the team going out on the road for the first time in conference play," said head coach Joe Legerski. "I mentioned to the players that it doesn't matter if you have eight seniors or eight freshmen, it's always difficult to play on the road in this conference. For us to travel to San Diego and come away with a win I really give our players a great deal of credit for playing as hard as they did. We got a big lift from several players like Sara Hippen, Kristen Lenhardt, Tarah Lapar and Lorissa Ewing when we needed it tonight. Teams are really keying in on Brenda and Ashley so we need others to step up and they did that tonight."

The Cowgirls will close out the weekend by traveling to Las Vegas to face the UNLV Lady Rebels on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. MT.
