Wyoming Basketball Downed by Broncos 58-49

Turnovers proved costly in the Wyoming basketball team’s 58-49 loss against the Boise State Broncos (12-6 overall, 5-2 MW). The Cowgirls drop to 10-8 overall and 3-5 in Mountain West action.

“I told the group at halftime that I liked where we were at. We were playing at a good pace, the score was tied up at 21 at halftime,” UW head coach Joe Legerski. “At the end of the third quarter, Boise State went on a run, I called a timeout and told the team they had to keep competing, make plays and have more energy. We came back, Marquelle made some plays, hit some shots and tied it up at 40. I told the team when you make a run that you have to come back with more defensive stops and it seemed like we relaxed thinking we were back into it. At the end, Boise State made more plays and we were in a position to play catch up.”

Senior Marquelle Dent finished her night with a team-high 19 points along with five assists. Sophomore Natalie Baker followed with ten points and six rebounds. Sophomore Liv Roberts recorded a team-high nine rebounds along with seven points. Wyoming shot 20-of-49 (408) from the field and 4-of-19 (.211) from three. The Cowgirls committed 20 turnovers and Boise State capitalized with 21 points off those.

Boise State had three players in double-figures led by Shay Shaw. She finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Miquelle Ashley added 12 points and Brooke Pahukoa chipped in 11 points. The Broncos shot 20-of-56 (.357) from the field and out rebounded UW 35-32.

Out of the break, a basket by Roberts ended a six minute scoring drought giving UW a 23-21 advantage. Shaw scored the next six points for the Broncos to get the lead back at four, 27-23. After a called timeout, Wyoming scored 8 of 12 points to tie it up at 31 all. Boise State ran off nine straight while the Cowgirls went 3:43 without scoring giving the Broncos a 40-31 advantage. A jumper by Dent start a 9-0 run with all points coming from the senior to tie the score at 40 with 6:57 left. Unfortunately, Boise State rattled off 14 of 17 points to extend its advantage to double-digits, 54-43. In the end, Wyoming ran out of time and on the short end of the scoreboard, 58-49.

The teams went back and forth in the early going of the first quarter until a Roberts’ field goal gave Wyoming an 11-9 advantage. Boise State responded with a 7-0 run to pull ahead by five, 16-11. A layup by Dent at the end of the frame ended a four-minute scoreless stretch for the Cowgirls and made it 16-13. A basket by Shaw increased the lead back to five, 18-13, which was answered by eight straight to help Wyoming regain a three-point lead, 21-18. Despite not scoring the final 5:13 of the half, the Cowgirls went into the locker room tied up at 21 all with the Broncos.

Roberts led the way for Wyoming with five points and five rebounds. Dent and Ligocki each added four points. The Cowgirls were 8-of-23 (.348) from the field and 3-of-4 (.750) from the free throw line. Boise State was led by Shay Shaw with five points and eight rebounds. The Broncos shot 9-of-29 (.310) from the field and out rebounded UW, 18-16.

The Cowgirls return home on Wednesday against the Fresno State Bulldogs. The game is set for 7 p.m. MT at the Arena-Auditorium.
