Laramie, Wyoming - Behind a double-double from senior Carrie Bacon, the Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball team (12-5 overall, 2-2 MWC) earned a 71-58 victory over the New Mexico Lobos (11-5 overall, 1-2 MWC), on Saturday afternoon in Laramie. It was the first time since the 1995-96 season that the Cowgirls have defeated the Lobos.
The Cowgirls opened up the game by scoring the first two points, but the Lobos answered back with six straight to take a 6-2 lead. A three-point basket by Carrie Bacon pulled UW to within one, but another 9-2 scoring run increased the Lobo lead to 15-7. With New Mexico up 17-11, Wyoming would slowly climb back into the game with nine straight points to regain a 19-17 lead, while the Lobos struggled going almost five minutes without a basket. The Cowgirls continued to build upon their lead over the several minutes by scoring the next nine of 11 points to open up their largest lead of the half 28-21. A very determined New Mexico team continued to battle cutting into the Cowgirl lead with a 7-1 scoring run, but the UW still took a 29-28 lead into the half.
New Mexico's Jordan Adams led all scorers with 12 points, while for the Cowgirls Carrie Bacon finished the first half with 11 points and four rebounds. Wyoming shot 10-20 (.500) from the field, while the Lobos struggled shooting only 33% (9-27).
Wyoming started out the second half strong by scoring the first nine points of the half to open up a ten point lead 38-28, as the Lobos struggled scoring their first points of the half almost three minutes in. The Cowgirls continued to build on that lead which at one point grew to as large as 13, 47-34. There was no giving up by the Lobos as they went on a 10-2 run to close within five points, but once again the Cowgirls responded with a 9-3 run to go back up 58-48. Still not willing to stop fighting New Mexico made a run at Wyoming and pulled to within four, but that is as close as it would get. The Cowgirls would finally pull away in the last three minutes and go onto the 71-58 victory.
Senior Carrie Bacon led all scorers and rebounders with 26 points and 10 boards. She was 8-13 from the field and a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. Center Ann McColl chipped in 16 points, Darci Arsene finished with seven and Brenda Pickup had six. As a team, the Cowgirls shot 21-46 (.457) from the field and 24-27 (.889) from the free throw line. In fact both teams were a perfect 18-18 from the charity stripe in the victory.
For the Lobos, they were led by Jordan Adams who finished with 16 points and six rebounds. Lindsey Arndt was the teams leading rebounder with nine, along with scoring 14 points. New Mexico struggled from the field shooting just 25% (15-60) from the field.
"This is such a huge win for us," said head coach Cindy Fisher. "For the first time when it was crunch time and a point that New Mexico could have gone on a run our defense really stepped it up. To hold a team like this to 18% shooting in the second half is phenomenal. We've been talking all year about letting our defense create offense and that's exactly what happened."
"We really got Carrie Bacon where she needed to be today to score. She was on the block, hit inside and outside that's just a huge performance for her. The thing I especially like is the ten rebounds, it just gives us great opportunities. It was a great team performance today."
Wyoming will be at home this week as they will host the Colorado State Rams, on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., in the Arena Auditorium.
