San Diego, Calif. -
The Cowgirl basketball team kept it close in the early going but couldn't overcome a double-figure deficit as they fell to the San Diego State Aztecs, 56-45, on Tuesday night. Wyoming is now 6-12 overall and 2-3 overall while the Aztecs run their record to 15-4 and a perfect 5-0 in the league.
"Another learning experience for this group," said head coach Joe Legerski. "I thought our team played hard for 40 minutes. Once again, we ended up rushing shots and missed opportunities at the free throw line which is something we need to correct. I understand that San Diego State has a great deal to deal with making you rush. They are talented and a difficult match-up for us."
Two Cowgirls finished the night in double-figures led by freshman Kayla Woodward. She recorded a team high 13 points and seven rebounds. Ashley Sickles followed with 11 points and Chaundra Sewell with eight points and eight rebounds. Wyoming shot 15-47 (.319) from the field and 5-13 (.385) from beyond the arc.
The Aztecs were led by Courtney Clements with 21 points and six rebounds. Erimma Amarikwa and Chelsea Hopkins each added seven points. Hopkins had a team high nine rebounds. SDSU was 22-60 (.367) from the field and out rebounded UW, 42-29.
San Diego State got on the board in the first minute of the game and then both teams didn't score until the 16:15 mark with a three point field goal by Ashley Sickles. Out of the media timeout, the Aztecs scored the next seven straight to regain the lead by six, 9-3. A free throw by Kayla Woodward stopped a three minute drought for Wyoming and started a small run to pull them to within three, 13-10. San Diego State answered with five of the next seven to extend the lead back to six, 18-12. Another three-point field goal by Ashley Sickles made it 18-15 with 9:46 left in the half. Over the next couple of minutes, SDSU went on a 5-3 run giving them a five point lead, 23-18. The Cowgirls kept chipping away as they closed the gap to two points, 23-21, with a basket from Kaitlyn Mileto. Unfortunately, the Aztecs closed out the half on a 7-0 run to give them a 30-21 lead going into the lockerroom.
Courtney Clements led all scorers with 16 points. Ashley Sickles had a Wyoming high nine points. Two players for the Aztecs finished with five rebounds. The Cowgirls shot 7-23 (.304) from the field and 5-8 (.625) from the field. San Diego State was 12-25 (.480) from the field and out rebounded Wyoming 20-8.
The Cowgirls scored first out of the break with a basket from Kayla Woodward. San Diego State scored four straight points to pull ahead by double-figures, 34-24. Two free throws and a basket made it a seven point game, 34-27. The Aztecs went on a 9-3 run to regain a 13-point advantage, 43-30. Kayla Woodward hit a shot to end a four minute drought for Wyoming. SDSU scored six of the next eight points increasing the lead to 15, 49-34, with 6:43 on the clock. The Cowgirls continued to fight with a 7-2 running bringing them to within ten, 51-41, with 3:38 remaining in the game. That would be as close as they would get as the Aztecs took the 56-43 victory.
Wyoming returns to play at home this weekend. They will host the Boise State Broncos, on Saturday, January 28, at 2:00 p.m.
