Laramie, Wyo. --
The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball Team(10-10 overall, 3-5 in the MWC) lost to the Brigham Young Cougars (15-6overall, 6-2 in the MWC) by the final of 75-58, Thursday night inLaramie.
The Cowgirls were led by junior Ann McColl, who finished with a teamhigh 15 points and five rebounds. Carrie Bacon and Carly Stucky alsochipped in 12 points each. The Cowgirls shot well from the field at 49%(20-41), but struggled with 20 turnovers.
Jennifer Leitner was the leading scorer and rebounder for the BrighamYoung Cougars with 15 points and seven boards. Four other Cougars finished indouble-figures on the night. As a team, they shot an amazing 53% (32-60)from the field, which included 38 points in the paint.
"To hold a good three-point shooting team to 25% is almost unheard ofand that was a part of their game that we were worried about," said headcoach Cindy Fisher. "We wanted to defend the arc well, and I felt we didthat. We got out and pressured them, but unfortunately probably too muchand they killed us down inside. They got easy opportunities and wedidn't take care of the ball in the second half, which led to easyscores for them. I didn't think we broke down defensively, we probablygot too worried about defending the three."
"I was pleased with how we shot the ball, just not with all of theturnovers. We just have to get some more consistency, but we just don'thave a lot of time to think about it. We have a huge game on Saturdaywith both teams being tied at 3-5 in the conference and someone has totakeover fifth place."
The Cowgirls will now host the Utah Utes (10-10 overall, 3-5 in theMWC), on Saturday afternoon, at 2:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium. TheUtes fell victim to the CSU Rams, 58-53, tonight in Ft. Collins.
