Wyoming Basketball Comes Up Short Against Frogs

The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team (18-6 overall, 8-3 MWC) fell short with a 65-54 loss TCU Horned Frogs (17-8 overall, 9-2 MWC) on Saturday afternoon in Ft. Worth.

Two Cowgirls finished the day in double-figures led by Aubrey Vandiver. She recorded 24 points and six rebounds while shooting 9-15 from the field. She was followed by Chaundra Sewell with 17 points, six assists and five rebounds. Hillary Carlson was the leading rebounder with seven. Wyoming was 19-48 (.396) from the field and 7-19 (.368) from beyond the arc.

TCU was led by Starr Crawford with 16 points and nine rebounds. Emily Carter added 16 points and Briesha Wynn chipped in 11 points. The Frogs were 24-57 (.421) from the field and 12-14 (.857) from the free throw line.

"Disappointed with the loss, but pleased with the effort," said head coach Joe Legerski. "Aubrey and Chaundra were huge on the offensive end, and we need that kind of effort every night. We will regroup and get back to work on Monday."

TCU took an early 4-2 led to begin, which was answered with a 5-0 run by the Cowgirls to put them up three, 7-4. The Horned Frogs came back with five points of the own to regain a two point advantage, 9-7. Two free throws by Chaundra Sewell tied it up at nine all, but two straight baskets by TCU extended the lead to 13-9. Wyoming scored the next six of eight to even it up at 15 all. After a basket by Briesha Wynn, a three-point field goal by Aubrey Vandiver gave UW a one point lead, 18-17. Over the next couple of minutes, the teams exchanged scores as the Frogs regained a two point advantage, 23-21, with 7:10 left in the half. The Cowgirls went on a 6-2 run to go back up by two, 27-25, with 3:43 left on the clock. Despite not scoring the rest of the way, Wyoming went into the lockerroom down 29-27.

Aubrey Vandiver led all scorers with 12 points, while shooting 4-5 from the field. Chaundra Sewell added eight points, while Hillary Carlson added four points and four rebounds. The Cowgirls shot 9-23 (.391) from the field and 4-11 (.364) from beyond the arc. TCU was led by Starr Crawford with eight points and five rebounds, while Briesha Wynn added six. The Horned Frogs shot 12-29 (.414) from the field, while out rebounding Wyoming 17-14.

Wyoming opened up the second half by scored the first six of ten to tie up the score at 33 all. Each team scored a couple of free throws to make it 35 all through the first media timeout. Over the next stretch of play, the teams traded scores back and forth until a three-point field goal by Aubrey Vandiver gave the Cowgirls a 43-41 lead with 12 minutes left to go. TCU answered with an 8-0 run to regain a six point advantage, 49-43. An Ashley Sickles basket would end the run to put the lead at 49-45 with under eight minutes to go in the game. The Frogs would extend the lead to seven, 55-48, with four minutes left in the game. Wyoming pulled to within five a couple of times, but unfortunately they would fall short by the final of 65-54.

The Cowgirls will have one game next week as they host the Utah Utes, on Wednesday, Feb. 16. The game is set for 7:00 p.m. in Laramie.
