LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball Team(12-13 overall, 4-8 in the MWC) suffered a heartbreaking 64-62 loss inovertime to the Colorado State Rams (21-5 overall 10-2 in the MWC), onSaturday night in Laramie.
The Rams opened up with the first basket of the game, but the Cowgirlscame back by going on a 14-8 run to open up a four point lead. CSUanswered back with an 11-0 run of their own to open up a seven pointadvantage, their largest of the game. Wyoming was kept in it by a coupleof three-pointers, and would go down into half, 23-29.
Wyoming hit the first couple of buckets out of the break to closewithin two, but the Rams continued to answer and hold onto the lead.With the score 41-34 in favor of the Rams, the Cowgirls would scoreeight unanswered points to take their first lead of the game at 42-41.Each team traded baskets for the remaining ten minutes and so it endedup 50-50 at the end of regulation.
The Cowgirls jumped out quickly in the overtime and with two minutesremaining held a 60-54 lead. But the Rams never quit fighting, athree-point shot by Jackie Campbell and a couple of buckets by CSU putthem up 63-62 and they would go onto the 64-62 victory.
The Cowgirls were led by Cherrith Wiersma, who finished with a teamleading 13 points. She was 4-8 from the field and a perfect 4-4 from thefree throw line. Carrie Bacon was the leading rebounder with ten alongwith her 12 points. As a team, the Cowgirls were 24-72 (.333) from thefield, while outrebounding the Rams 46-40.
CSU was led by senior Angie Gorton, who finished with 18 points andeight rebounds. The Rams shot .42% (22-53) from the field.
"We had this victory tonight, it was just ours to give away," said headcoach Cindy Fisher. "We played an excellent basketball game. I thoughtthe girls fought hard, executed the game plan perfectly, it justcamedown to a couple of shots and that's all there is to it. At the endof the game, we didn't execute as well, turned the ball over when it wasvery important, other than that it's a fantastic basketball game andthey did everything we asked them to do."
