Despite only being down tenpoints at halftime, the Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team was defeated byNew Mexico 88-52 before 7,151 fans at The Pit in Albuquerque.
The Cowgirls were led by Carrie Bacon, who scored 15 points and pulleddown eight rebounds. Also helping the Wyoming cause was Shelby Hoffmanwith 13 points, including three three-pointers.
The difference in the game was New Mexico's field-goal shooting andrebound advantage. For the game, UNM shot 29-52, good for 55 percent,while the Cowgirls shot 18-59, 30 percent. The rebound advantage was42-28 in favor of New Mexico.
Wyoming did do an excellent job of protecting the ball, with only 18turnovers. New Mexico finished the game with 22 turnovers.
New Mexico was led by Jordan Adams, who had 14 points, nine reboundsand five blocked shots.
"I thought we played a decent first half," said Wyoming head coachCindy Fisher. "We could have had the lead down to six at halftimewithout a couple of last minute breakdowns. They shot the ball realwell in the first half, but we battled back and were in the ballgame.We came out and had a real slow first five minutes of the second half.They went on a run that was the difference. We shot poorly and hadtrouble scoring from there on.
"Afterwards I talked to the team and told them what is ahead for us,"said Fisher. "We need to get a win at Air Force for a split before wecome home. We'll play better in these last three games, and work hardto be successful at the MWC tournament."
The Cowgirls are now 8-16 overall with a record of 2-9 in the MountainWest Conference. Wyoming will be at Air Force on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
