COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
Nine Cowgirls got in the scoring column as the Wyoming basketball team earned a 73-32 victory over the Air Force Falcons, on Wednesday night. The Cowgirls are now 19-7 overall on the season and 10-5 in the Mountain West while the Falcons fall to 1-24 overall and 0-15 in league play. Junior Kaitlyn Mileto reached 1,000 points for her career and is the 22nd player in school history to reach that mark.
"It was a great team effort, very workman like," said head coach Joe Legerski. "I was happy to be able to play a number of players extended minutes. I was also very pleased with Kayla Woodward played shooting the basketball and Marquelle Dent got us going both offensively and defensively. This game tonight was about team basketball."
Out of the halftime break, the two teams exchanged baskets until a 7-2 run would increase the UW lead to 26, 45-19, with 15:59 left in the game. Over the next four minute stretch, the Cowgirls scored 14 of the next 16 points to make it a 38-point contest, 59-21. A free throw by Thompson ended the scoring drought for the Falcons and then they went another six minutes without scoring. It was never a contest as Wyoming went on to the 73-32 win.
Three Cowgirls finished the night in double figures led by junior Kayla Woodward. She recorded 19 points and six rebounds, while shooting 7-12 from the field and 5-7 from beyond the arc. Mileto finished with 14 points followed by Marquelle Dent with 12 points and nine rebounds. Fallon Lewis finished with five points and a team high eight rebounds. Wyoming shot 27-62 (.435) from the field and 10-24 (.417) from beyond the arc.
Air Force was led by Camille Thompson with nine points and eight rebounds. Jimi Blagowsky followed with eight points and six rebounds. The Falcons shot 13-46 (.283) from the field and 2-11 (.182) from beyond the arc.
Wyoming got on the board early 4-0 with two baskets from Sibrel and Lewis. A three-point field goal by Camille Thompson got the Falcons in the scoring column with 16:36 left on the clock. Started by a Mileto basket, the Cowgirls would go on 10-0 run to extend the lead to double-figures, 14-3. Mileto would also score her sixth point of the game to reach 1,000 points for her career. Lindsey Lewis would hit a shot to end a four minute scoreless drought for the Falcons and would score five straight to close the gap to six, 14-8. Wyoming answered back with 12 straight over the next six minute stretch to make it 26-8. The Falcons struggled scoring just three points in the final ten minutes of the half, as the Cowgirls would take a 34-11 lead going into the locker room. The 11 points was the least amount of points given up by a Cowgirl team this season.
Woodward led all scorers with nine points and five rebounds. Mileto followed with seven points and Kaylie Rader with six. The Cowgirls shot 36.4 percent (12-33) from the field and 41.7 percent (5-12) from beyond the arc. Lujan finished with six first half points for the Falcons, while Thompson finished with four points and six rebounds. Air Force shot 19.2 percent (5-26) from the field and committed 12 turnovers.
Wyoming will close out the week on the road against the Boise State Broncos, on Saturday, March 1. The game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Boise.
