Cowgirls Close Out Conference Season With Victory

Laramie, Wyo. -- The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball Teamclosed out their regular season with a 71-67 victory over the Air ForceAcademy Falcons. The Cowgirls are now 13-14 overall and 5-9 in theconference, while the Falcons fell to 4-23 overall and 0-14 in theconference.

The Falcons opened up the first half of the game by scoring the firsteight points, and it wouldn't be until two free shots by Carrie Baconbefore the Cowgirls would get on the board. Over the next ten minutesAir Force continued to hold onto the lead, which would grow to theirlargest of eleven. Wyoming hung tough by going on a 17-8 run to pullwithin two and went into the half down 37-35.

The Cowgirls were aggressive to begin the second half by scoring thefirst two baskets to take their first lead of the game, 39-37. The twoteams would trade baskets and the lead, until two three-point shots byTara Rimsky put the Cowgirls up 55-50. They held onto the lead untilfree throws by the Falcons tied the game up at 64. But the Cowgirlsremained poised and out hussled the Falcons to go onto the 71-67victory.

Wyoming was led by Darci Arsene, who finished with a career-tying 23points, along with eight rebounds. She was 7-9 from the field and 9-10from the free throw line. Carrie Bacon was the leading rebounder withnine, as she also chipped in eight points. As a team, the Cowgirls were22-54 (.407) from the field, while outrebounding 41-39.

Latoya Howell and Shawna Neff led the Falcons in scoring with 14 pointseach, while Rozalyn Russ finished with a team high nine rebounds. AirForce shot 35% (23-65) from the field.

"The fun thing about a game with Air Force is that they will battle,"said head coach Cindy Fisher. "This was their last opportunity to win aconference game and I thought they will really focused. We really had alot of emotion, which you always do on senior night so it takes you alittle while to get going. But despite all of that I was just proud ofthe girls and how they got it done. It was a great game, I knew it wouldbe and it would come down to the end."

The Cowgirls will head to Las Vegas next week for the MWC Tournament,March 6-9. Their next opponent will be announced tonight.
